Safety Audit
Issue 7: Child safety is an ongoing process!
by the Paranoid Sisters

Keeping up-to-date on the facts concerning child safety can be a
daunting task. Two particular examples have surfaced over the last
couple of weeks.
In the first instance, we were checking out a board and
there was a question about hooks in a new car. We were unaware of what
they were for and referred the person to the owners manual. As it
turned out, new cars are being required to install hooks for tethers on
car seats. What a great idea. Get further info here:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/childps/toptether/index.html.
In the second instance, we received an email regarding sunscreen causing
blindness in children. We recalled this email hoax from last summer.
There is an excellent article about the sunscreen hoax and interpreting
articles in general at the following address:

So... what did we learn this month? First, the guidelines are ever
changing, and it is a good idea to be signed up for updates. There is a
list of resources on our site in the links section. Second, be sure
that what you are reading is from a credible source and the information
has been verified. If it is not obvious where the information came from,
then we list the source/sources. This month really reaffirmed what we
always say: Child safety is an ongoing process!
