Safety Audit
Issue 13: Pesticides
by the Paranoid Sisters
Most of us look at child proofing like we look at an IRS audit: we hope
we never have to go through it. If we do, we hope it only happens once.
Have you ever looked around your once child proofed house and noticed the many
hazards that have piled up like your laundry. As we do a safety tune-up (yes,
even the Paranoid Sisters need safety tune-ups) we take you with us.
We received a great response to a recent Safety Audit. As is the case
with safety, many times it is just a matter of getting educated about an
unknown danger. A reader was kind enough to send this response about
pesticides. "I just read your tip with the story about the little boy who was just
"testing the water." What you didn't note was another major hazard in that
story. The door had been left unlocked so the "pest control man could come and spray." Well, spray what?
Spray it where? Why? I think you should do some reading up on the rather frightening facts
about pesticides and their colossal (and usually utterly unnecessary) misuse and all of the
health problems that have resulted from that (and in many cases to children). I'd be even more worried about a
neighbor who hired someone to "spray".... Are they spraying their lawn? Their trees? Likely to drift
right over to your property. This stuff is poison. It kills. And it's usually utterly unnecessary." The
site that was recommended for learning more is the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides.
Their web site is http://www.beyondpesticides.org/.
We learned a lot just from a quick look at the site. There is actually a
phase out happening with Diazinon which is commonly used around homes. Thank
you to Martha for letting us know about this great site.
